These markets are among the most vibrant cultural experiences in northern Vietnam, where different ethnic groups gather to buy, sell, and exchange goods while wearing their traditional clothing.

Optional Market Excursions

Option 1: Cao Son Market (Wednesday)

Enjoy a scenic drive of around 2 hours to Cao Son Market, located in a mountainous area surrounded by pine forests and remote villages. This market is attended by several ethnic groups such as the Flower Hmong, Tu Di, Tay, and Giay.

Here, local people come to trade food, agricultural products, livestock, textiles, and household goods. After visiting the market, continue to Muong Khuong for lunch. Later, visit peaceful nearby villages where you can observe traditional practices such as corn wine distillation and sample local corn cake in a village home.

Option 2: Bac Ha Market (Sunday)

Drive for approximately 2.5 hours from Sapa to Bac Ha Market, one of the largest and most colorful weekly markets in the region. This lively market attracts many ethnic communities, including the Flower Hmong, Phu La, and Dao Tuyen.

After the market visit, continue downhill to Trung Do Village, home of the Tay people, where you can explore traditional stilt houses or enjoy an oxcart ride through the village.

Option 3: Can Cau Market (Saturday)

Located about 3 hours from Sapa near the Vietnam–China border, Can Cau Market is smaller than Bac Ha but equally vibrant and photogenic. Held only on Saturdays, this colorful market is well known for the striking traditional clothing worn by the Flower Hmong, Nung, and Phu La people.

Lunch is served at Bac Ha Market before continuing to Trung Do Village to explore Tay traditional houses and the peaceful countryside.
